Handmade Oriental rug
300 x 200cm (9'10 x 6'7)
This is excellent silk on silk carpet from Iran; the detail is incredible, which of course, can only be achieved when working silk that is knotted upon silk warp and wefts. The carpet has a stunning central design often found in these exotic pieces. Although the carpet is primarily red, the carpet is softened by the use of blues, cream, taupe and green. One of the features I particularly like in this piece is black silk, which is used sparingly to punctuate the overall pattern. It is possibly one of the finest pieces we have ever purchased!

It is the second holiest city after Mashad and is an important place for pilgrimage for Shiite Muslims worldwide. It is a modern industrial city with over a million inhabitants and is a distribution centre for petroleum products.
Rug weaving began in Qum in the 1930s. They are renowned for producing some of Iran's most delicate Persian rugs and carpets. They are of high quality with excellent materials and are of solid construction. Knot density can range from 300,000 to 1,200,000 per square metre.
They can be made of wool on a cotton foundation or silk on silk. Sometimes the wool rugs have silk highlights. The patterns they use include the Boteh or Paisley design, the Bakhtiar garden design, hunting scenes or central medallion. Skilled weavers can weave 8000 knots per day on the width of one metre or 8mm per day. A rug measuring 150 x 100cm in the fine quality of 1,200,00 per metre can take a year to make.

It is worth perhaps being reminded that these handmade rugs are unique and special; owning one is something you can enjoy for many years. I would recommend buying a handmade rug produced using the best natural fibre, which is wool.
We recommend the use of an underlay with this product:
